Restoring the Past. Protecting the Grade

Precision trading card conservation, stabilization, and pre-grading preparation based in Virginia.

The Philosophy

Every high-value trading card represents a balance between delicate paper engineering and collectible history. Over time, factory imperfections, handling stress, improper storage, and ambient humidity take their toll—costing collectors thousands in lost subgrades or leaving cherished binder cards vulnerable to gradual degradation.

We bridge the gap between archival paper preservation and third-party grading standards. Our mission is simple: to bring your cards to their highest natural aesthetic and structural ceiling without ever compromising their factory integrity.

Conservation vs. Doctoring: Our Ethical Standard

We operate strictly within the permissible boundaries recognized by major third-party authenticators (PSA, BGS, CGC).

What We Do (Conservation)What We Never Do (Doctoring)Non-invasive decontamination: Removing light grime, factory dust, fingerprint oils, and plasticizer haze. No recoloring or inking: We never apply pigments, markers, or dyes to conceal white borders or creases.Hygroscopic fiber relaxation: Using controlled atmospheric vapor chambers to soften and re-expand compressed cellulose fibers. No trimming or re-edging: We never shave, cut, or alter original factory card dimensions.Mechanical planar stabilization: Realigning lifted edges, flattening light surface wrinkles, and evening out curl under calibrated compression. No artificial fillers: We never inject waxes, glues, silicone, or industrial resins into surface cavities or scratches.

Conservation vs. Doctoring: Our Ethical Standard

We operate strictly within the permissible boundaries recognized by major third-party authenticators (PSA, BGS, CGC).

What We Do (Conservation)

  • Non-invasive decontamination: Removing light grime, factory dust, fingerprint oils, and plasticizer haze.

  • Hygroscopic fiber relaxation: Using controlled atmospheric vapor chambers to soften and re-expand compressed cellulose fibers.

  • Mechanical planar stabilization: Realigning lifted edges, flattening light surface wrinkles, and evening out curl under calibrated compression.

“True conservation does not alter the card; it reveals the card that came off the factory press before time and handling intervened”

The Process & The Lab

Our workstation is purpose-built to eliminate risk and deliver repeatable, scientific results:

  • Microscopic Triage: Every card undergoes 360-degree inspection under 10×–40× digital magnification and oblique raking LED lighting before any tool touches the surface.

  • Controlled Climate Conditioning: Indirect humidity chambers regulate fiber elasticity at exact relative humidity (RH) thresholds, preventing core fractures during manipulation.

  • Zero-Abrasion Media: From high-polish natural agate burnishers and non-stick PTFE barriers to optical-grade Melinex films, no abrasive or chemical-stripping materials are ever introduced.

  • Calibrated Long-Dwell Pressing: Cards are set between precision-ground aluminum or optical cast-acrylic blocks under uniform mechanical tension for up to seven days to lock in planar memory permanently.

What We never do (doctoring)

  • No recoloring or inking: We never apply pigments, markers, or dyes to conceal white borders or creases.

  • No trimming or re-edging: We never shave, cut, or alter original factory card dimensions.

  • No artificial fillers: We never inject waxes, glues, silicone, or industrial resins into surface cavities or scratches.

Meet the Conservator

Matthew Bunton

Founder & Head Conservator

“With nearly three decades of military precision, systems engineering, and analytic discipline, I approach every card not as a piece of cardboard, but as an engineered asset requiring methodical care. As an active collector and community moderator, I treat every submission—whether a Base Set Charizard or a modern 1/1 sports refractor—with the same obsessive attention to detail and transparency.”
